Autumn FunGlass School in  Papradno

From 27 to 29 November 2019, FunGlass researchers, PhD students and administrative employees spent their regular FunGlass School in Papradno.

Prof. D. de Ligny and his lecture

This time, the FunGlass School seminar was dedicated especially to the scientific skills session – presentation of various research topics of our postdoc colleagues and PhD students (abstracts from presentations will be published in Book of Abstracts – published soon). We were also pleased to welcome foreign experts from the field of glass and ceramics – prof. Dr. Dominique de Ligny from the Institute of Glass and Ceramics of FAU Erlangen with the lectures and training related to Raman spectroscopy and tenured scientist DrFrancisco Muñoz Fraile from Ceramics and Glass Institute of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC), Madrid who lectured on Fundamentals of solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and application to the structure of glasses.

The scientific program was complemented by the presentations on FunGlass project update and FunGlass review impulses: first feedback and recommendations of the representatives of the European Commission on the FunGlass project progress and the strategy for the upcoming period. The problematic issues with business trip process were actively discussed between the researchers and administration staff.

At the end of Thursday’s program, participants took part in an English knowledge quiz

Dr. Francisco Munoz

held in an entertaining form by FunGlass English teacher Rob Lee. The participants tested not only their English language competences but also their knowledge of science, geography, foreign languages and others. Congratulations to the most successful group represented by Dominique de Ligny, Ali Talimian, Nasima Afsharimani, Kristin Griebenow, Arish Dasan, Francisco Muñoz and CSIC PhD student Alberto López Grande.

As a part of teaming with advanced partners, Dr. Rajesh Dagupati, recently returned back from his long-term training stay, shared his first-hand experience from Institute of Glass and Ceramics of CSIC in Madrid, Spain.

FunGlass School Principles:

The ‘FunGlass school’ is based on the summer school concept described in the Grant Agreement of the FunGlass project, intended as a set of condensed training periods for all FunGlass employees and aiming to be one of the key elements of education and training beyond the specialized, individual work programs. Some of the goals of the school include training in the presentation of scientific results, learning of interdisciplinary research, interdisciplinary & intercultural communication, mastering skills, such as management, writing and presentation of projects, fundraising of projects and grants, etc.

  • It is organized twice a year (Spring and Fall) as an intensive offsite training camp for all employees and PhD students of the Centre.
  • The agenda is divided into two parts: a) scientific part and b) complementary skills / outreach activities
  • All participating FunGlass researchers/doctoral students present their scientific results.

Big thanks again goes to our colleague Vanda Mokráňová – for perfect organisation and her patience with our requirements….We are looking forward to the Spring FunGlass School!
