Karolina Milewska from the Gdańsk University of Technology  in FunGlass

In August, we could welcome to FunGlass the PhD student Karolina Milewska from Institute of Nanotechnology and Materials Engineering, Gdańsk University of Technology (Poland) in the framework of the Erasmus+ internship.

Karolina is a second-year PhD student at the Gdańsk University of Technology, Faculty of Applied Physics and Mathematics in the field of material engineering. The topic of her PhD studies is the synthesis and characterization of glass and glass-ceramics materials doped with rare-earth elements.

The main goal is to increase the luminescence of rare-earth elements, by achieving the formation of nanocrystals and nanoparticles in a glassy matrix. Karolina’s internship is focussing on the obtention Borate-bismuth glasses and glass-ceramics doped with Ag nanoparticles and/or codoped by Europium ions, and study the structural-optical relationship to improve the luminescence with the help of Dr. Jose Joaquin Velazquez, Dr. Kristin Griebenow and Dr. Michal Zitnan.

She will be with us for a 2-month internship till the middle of October.
