FunGlass Hosted PhD Researcher from the University of Vigo for Advanced Glass Manufacturing Research

During November and December 2025, the FunGlass Centre hosted Mr. Hamza Sajjad, a PhD student from the University of Vigo, for a two-month research stay focused on advanced and sustainable glass processing technologies. The visit was carried out within the Horizon Europe project EverGlass (The New Role of Glass in a Sustainable Society. Technology for the Integral Recycling of Glass) and Spanish national science grant´project glADDmorph  (Laser-assisted additive manufacturing applied to glass and glass-ceramics: towards high mechanical performance materials) projects. This stay was also supported by the EU NextGenerationEU through the Recovery and Resilience Plan for Slovakia under the project No. 09I01-03-V04-00076 (Glass4ever).

His primary focus was on the synthesis of waste glass–based solid and hollow spherical particles using the flame synthesis machine. His work involved preparing the feedstock glass for the flame synthesis process through ball milling and sieving. He also performed the characterization of the synthesized waste glass spherical particles using various analytical techniques available at FunGlass.

The produced spherical particles will subsequently be used as feedstock for the Glass Laser Morphing machine at the University of Vigo for additive manufacturing of glass. This will enable a detailed comparison of the processing behavior of spherical and irregularly shaped particles based on the glass laser morphing principle.

The outcomes of this stay will contribute to ongoing research activities within both projects and further strengthen cooperation between FunGlass and the University of Vigo. We thank Mr. Sajjad for his contribution and wish him continued success in his PhD research.
