Research Training of Sheeraz Khan at Montanuniversität Leoben

We are pleased to announce that our doctoral student, Sheeraz Khan, has begun a three-month research training stay (June–August) at Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria. The stay is organized through the ERASMUS program and hosted by the Chair of Ceramics, under the supervision of Prof. Harald Harmuth, an internationally recognized expert in the field of refractory research. Prof. Harmuth’s work is renowned for its contributions to understanding refractory wear mechanisms—both discontinuous and continuous—and encompasses key areas such as thermomechanical and fracture mechanical characterization, thermochemical simulation, and corrosion studies.

Sheeraz Khan’s training commenced with an introductory presentation in which he shared a segment of his PhD thesis and introduced the FunGlass Center and its research activities. The session was attended by members of the Chair of Ceramics and representatives from RHI Magnesita R&D, a leading global refractory manufacturer.

During his stay, Sheeraz will focus on investigating continuous wear and dissolution mechanisms of fused AZS (alumina-zirconia-silica) refractories in contact with Barium cristallin glass. His research will employ a continuous wear testing device to provide deeper insight into refractory dissolution and wear behaviors, contributing valuable knowledge to both academic and industrial sectors.

We wish him a productive and enriching research experience in Leoben.
