Prof. Dr. Aldo Boccaccini
Professor A. R. Boccaccini (ARB), Head of the Institute of Biomaterials and supervisor of the present project, is a highly recognized researcher internationally in the biomaterials field. He is also visiting Professor at Imperial College London, UK. He holds an engineering degree from Instituto Balseiro (Argentina), Dr-Ing. from RWTH Aachen University (Germany) and Habilitation from TU Ilmenau (Germany). He has held post-doctoral appointments at University of Birmingham (UK) and University of California San Diego (USA). He was a senior researcher at Technical University of Ilmenau (Germany) and Prof. of Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London (UK) until 2009, when he joined the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg as Professor and Head of Institute. The research activities of Prof. Boccaccini are in the field of glasses, ceramics and composites for biomedical, functional and/or structural applications. He is the author or co-author of more than 600 scientific papers and 15 book chapters. His work has been cited more than 15,000 times and he was named in the 2014 Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher list. Boccaccini has been a visiting professor at different universities around the world, including Japan, Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Netherlands, Singapore, Argentina and Poland. His achievements have been recognized with several awards including, most recently, the Materials Prize of the German Materials Society (DGM) in 2015 and the Turner Award of the International Commission on Glass (2016). In 2015, he was elected member (academician) of the World Academy of Ceramics. Boccaccini is the editor-in-chief of the journal Materials Letters and serves in the editorial board of more than 10 international journals, including being a guest editor of J. Mater. Sci., and J. Europ. Ceram. Soc. In 2015 he was elected member of the Council of the European Society for Biomaterials (ESB). He also serves in the Review Panel of the German Science Foundation (DFG) (since 2011) and is an international advisor to the Ministry of Science and Technology of Argentina (since 2008). ARB is fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3, UK) (since 2004) and of the American Ceramic Society (since 2011). At the Institute of Biomaterials, he leads a team of 30+ researchers, including 21 PhD students, Master students, several post-doctoral researchers, visiting students and academic visitors. ARB is currently Working Group leader (Biomaterials) within the European Virtual Institute KMM (KMMVIN: http://www.kmm-vin.eu/). ARB acted as representative for Germany to the Management Committee of the COST ACTION MP 1005 (http://www.cost.esf.org/domains_actions/mpns/Actions/Associated with document Ref. Ares(2017)278766 – 18/01/2017 739566 FunGlass –Part B – 57 MP1005), related to biomaterials for applications in regenerative and dental medicine. ARB is a German representative to the Technical Committee 04 “Bioglasses” of the International Commission on Glass, and he is the founding editor-in-chief of the journal “Biomedical Glasses”. These activities indicate the international dimension of the research being carried out by his research group at Erlangen. ARB has hosted numerous academic visitors in the last years as part of the fellowship program of the Network of Excellence (KMM-NoE). ARB have hosted (and is hosting) numerous EU Marie Curie research fellows. Finally it is significant to mention the long list of international institutions with which ARB holds collaboration (see above).

Dr. Julia Will
Dr Julia Will is a senior research assistant working since 2003 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Department of Materials Science and Engineering. She holds a diploma degree from the University Erlangen-Nuremberg and a PhD in materials science of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich, Switzerland). The emphasis of her research activities lays in the field of ceramic processing. After her PhD she worked at the Zentral Institute of Medical Technique at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) as the group leader for ceramics. Since 2009 she works as group leader for bioceramics at the Institute of Biomaterials, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and she is also a lecturer for biomaterials in the courses Materials Science and Engineering and Medical Engineering.

Dr. Rainer Detsch
Dr. Rainer Detsch is a senior research lecturer at the Institute of Biomaterials, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg where he leads the section Cell Biology and Tissue Engineering. He obtained his PhD in Bioengineering at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Bayreuth, Germany, in 2009. His postgraduate studies were in the field of Bioprocess Engineering at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany (M.Sc. 2001-2002). He has published 65 Journal papers, 8 book chapters, 2 patents and he has been invited to present 12 keynote lectures. Dr. Detsch is also a lecturer for cell-material interactions in the undergraduate programs Materials Science and Engineering and Medical Engineering at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.
