Seminar „Presentation Training“

The Topic:          Optimizing talks for real occasions and improving the ability to constructively criticize.

Delivered by:     Wolfgang Wisniewski

Timeframe        March 7 – May 23, 2019 (Mondays and Thursdays) @ 13:00 – 14:30

Mondays:          Mar 18, 25, Apr 1, 8, 15, 29, May 6, 13, 20

Thursdays:        Mar 7 (Introductory session), 14, 21, 28, Apr 4, 11, 25, May 2, 9, 16, 23

Room:                March 7, 14 – Furnace Lab 3

All other dates – VILA meeting room

We can do up to 3 presentations a session:

Conference presentations: 15 min

PhD defense presentations: 20 min

(including discussion this means up to 30 – 35 min for each presenter)

Objectives:        – Improve the style in presentation slides

                            – Improve the ability to provide constructive criticism

                            – Improve body language and English during presentations

The Rules: A guideline of basic concepts that should be followed in the slides will be provided. I will show how I manage my presentations as an example to ensure quality and comparability on March 7th. If anybody has a presentation ready, they can have a first run on March 7th under very friendly circumstances.

For the next two sessions (14.3. and 18.3.), the presenters will be allowed to complete their presentation before we work on it. Then, for the next two sessions (21.3. and 25.3.), I will abort the presentation after 10 violations of the guide line. After that, I will abort after 5 violations. This is aimed at providing motivation to start first and preventing people from preparing a bad presentation and then having the group fix it for them (I have experienced this in the past).

The presenters will have time to correct their presentations and, if they want to, present again for another round of optimizing after every presenter has had their first go (another motivator to go early, because otherwise you may not get a second round).

  • Be punctual: participants should be on time or not come at all… It is unfair towards the presenter if someone comes in late and disturbs the talk.
  • Stick to the goal time of the presentations.
  • Drinks (i.e. coffee, tea) will not be not allowed into the seminar, it should not be entertainment.
